This white paper advocates the introduction of Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) in India as a means of improving blood safety by earlier detection of transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) than the currently used serological detections. It presents the expressions of expert consensus, examples of accomplished public-private collaborations, and the efficacy of NAT in reducing residual risks of infection. In form, achieving wide adoption of NAT will thus truly enhance nationwide transfusion safety.
