SHCOs are the bedrock of the healthcare system in Tamil Nadu, managing >90% of the patients. Yet, these fire safety measures are often based on big hospitals, and thus difficult to implement in smaller settings. Recent updated regulations have been influenced by relentless campaigning, making requirements easier to comply with. Hospitals need knowledge, acceptance of the practicalities and compliance with the law in order to avoid operational risks. Ignorance isn’t a defense — fire safety must be proactive, not reactive — for the continued delivery of safe healthcare in communities.
